About Our Programs
Camping to Connect uses outdoor recreation and nature immersion to address the diverse issues faced by young men of color in America’s cities—from mental health to healthy masculinity. We provide a safe space for meaningful conversations, connecting youth ages 13+ with nature, their peers, and dedicated mentors. Our leaders reflect the backgrounds of our youth participants, fostering a vital paradigm shift in their self-perception and understanding of their place in the world.

Weekend Camping Experience
Our core program, a weekend-long wilderness camping trip, gives participants an opportunity to experience both the benefits and challenges of nature. Our weekend-long trips:
—Allow students aged 13 to 18 to build a deep connection to the outdoors and form a brotherhood with one another.
—Instruct students in basic outdoor skills such as trail navigation, campfire building, and wilderness cooking.
—Offer students support and mentorship from caring adult men.
—Build emotional self-awareness and confidence.
—Teach participants about community values, teamwork, personal responsibility.
—Promote effective communication skills, leadership, and group development.

Single-Day Hikes
Day hikes in local state parks give participants an opportunity to escape the bustle of the city and experience some of the benefits of nature. Led by adult volunteers, our day hikes:
—Teach students how to navigate a hiking trail by themselves using a map.
—Introduce students to “Leave No Trace” nature-stewardship principles.
—Provide opportunities to practice leadership roles and responsibilities.
—Include lunchtime conversations with supportive mentors on topics like setting goals and healthy living.
—Foster peer bonding and also offer a chance for personal reflection.
